The Rotary Foundation is our own Charity and makes an amazing difference both in the UK and worldwide. Ignoring the Polio initiative it raises in excess of US$100 million each year for spending on Humanitarian and Educational programmes and projects. The “Mission Statement” of The Rotary Foundations is “To enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty”.
The first few days of the New Year have brought us some excellent news in respect of the work being done regarding polio. India has been polio free for a year. Rotary Clubs worldwide have meet the US$200 million Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Challenge but the fund remains open & ongoing. A further US$50million is being made available by the Gates Foundation for this work bringing the total to US$385m. The Job is so close now to being finished but still a desperate need for further funding. The WHO and UNICEF planned programme for the rest of the year exceeds identified funds by US$535m. Help from Rotary still needed, not only funds but advocacy worldwide for governmental support.
